Late showers and thunderstorms

Storm activity developed inland during the afternoon as expected.  Some cells appeared marginally severe on radar, with likely hail and strong winds. Later, briefly heavy showers and the odd storm moved through coastal areas giving some light to moderate totals. More news later.

Patchy showers/storms

Unfortunately, cloud became a big factor about today. An area of mid level cloud moved over SEQld today (to just south of the Qld/NSW border) and prevented any half decent storm development. An isolated storm did develop over the NW suburbs but that quickly fell flat as an area of patchy light rain/showers moved through. [...]

Storms tomorrow?

It looks like tomorrow will be the second day out of 5 that we will see thunderstorm activity.  I’m not expecting anything huge, but small hail isn’t out of the question with temps at 500hpa down to around -20, and cooling further towards midnight. Thick cloud could mess things up but hopefully the cold upper [...]

Showers and storms / NT snow

Today became warmer than expected – making it feel like a Spring day, and storms started developing on the ranges from mid-late morning.  Hail was reported in a number of locations – click on the radar and look for the dark red areas.  Maximum temps were in the 24-25 range.  Despite the high reflectivities on [...]

Showers ahead of cold front / Snow in SA

It looks like the first rain this month is about to happen in SEQld. Current radar shows showers developing on the Downs and Granite Belt and and also offshore, generally moving SSE. I’d expect most places will get some over the next 18 hours. There shouldn’t be anything too significant, but still, the dust should [...]

Great sunset / cold morning / massive snow depths in NZ

Yesterday August 18 was a cloudy but fine day but it was apparent the cloud would clear late in the day. That often means a great sunset will occur, and it did… The rest of the images are here. So far this month, almost no rain has occurred because of dry SW’ly winds leading to [...]

Very cold mornings… dry days… snowy in SE Aus

We are in the middle of a run of cold mornings and dry, clear days. Typical August weather for the region. On Saturday (Aug 9) Glen Innes went down to -13C! Yesterday, they were very cold again at -9C, while Tenterfield was -8C, Stanthorpe -7C, Warwick -6C, Applethorpe -5C, Oakey -4C and Amberley -2.9C. I [...]

Light showers / isolated storms / NT snow

A developed low in the Tasman extended a trough/front into Qld’s southern inland, causing some instability. Light showers/patchy rain developed with falls only to about 5mm at best. Some weak high based thunderstorm activity developed on the Darling Downs (in areas NW of Toowoomba) and also near Gympie-Biggendon during the evening. This activity is clearing [...]
